In which I talk about sports, kinda

I've been hearing entirely too much about the terrible NFL refs. They're bad. I get it.

I've also been hearing a lot of theories about why the NFL won't just pay the money for the refs retirement funds. The best one I've heard is that they want to look tough going into the player union contract negotiations.

But I had another thought. The stories I'm hearing now are about "terrible refs", and "contract disputes". The stories I was hearing a few weeks back were about "football causes brain damage, even to kids". I think that the NFL is ok with this change.

Given my status as a consummate sportsman, versed in all the intricacies of professional sports, can someone who knows what they're talking about tell me if I'm nuts?

Actually, one of the biggest complaints about the new refs (well, other than blowing calls that affect the outcome of games) is that they've been missing obvious fouls, thus making injury to the players much more likely (since they're fouls for a reason).

That's a pretty cynical view. I'd hate it if you were right. There's a movie coming out about head trauma and sports so i don't think the issue is going away anytime soon, but who knows.
