Last week [profile] mz_hotspur asked to come to the gym with me sometime. So on Saturday I abducted her from [personal profile] ricevermicelli and off we went.

She was a great lifting partner. She did a LOT. She squatted a 20 lb EZ bar (bear in mind she doesn't yet weigh 50 lbs), pressed a wide grip bar (I'm guessing 10 lbs?), progressed from 5 to 10 to 15 lbs on a lat pulldown, I forget what she managed on the V bar triceps pushdown, discovered that she's just plain too short for the hyperextension machine. She did respectably on the battle rope, she curled a 5 lb dumbbell,... She did all the stuff.

Also, trying to demonstrate & describe proper form improved my form. I squatted more than I have since my medical excitement a year ago, and it wasn't a reach. It felt, well, not _easy_, but I had planned to stay within myself, and I felt like I was doing that despite setting a recent PR.

She wanted to stay there all day and lift all the things. I wanted to get food into her, so we left after she'd done at least some of most everything.

After lunch we hung out at home for a while and read, then off we went to see roller derby. We had a blast, then attended the after party. She saw a circle of women dancing and instantly realized that her place in the universe right then was to be in the middle of that circle, dancing with all of them. So she did. It was her dance floor, she graciously allowed other people to use it.

Three separate people came up to me to let me know that there is junior derby, and I could sign her up, they'd be happy to have her. I think they just want to make sure that she keeps coming to their parties...

While cooking dinner I was playing "Sign o' the times". [livejournal.com profile] schr0dinger walked in and said "That sounds like Prince.".

Over the last couple of days I've been playing music while making dinner.

Tonight the kids both asked for Barracuda & Ballroom Blitz.

I just very carefully accidentally left their computer open to a British Invasion playlist.

Yesterday the kids and I were barbecuing to an Elvis playlist on youtube. A new song came on, and I thought "I didn't know Elvis covered a Pet Shop Boys tune. It's good, but he really didn't do it justice. Wait..."

It turns out that Always on my mind has been recorded by a number of musicians.

The kids actually put down their water guns when I played the 1987 original.

Tonight [livejournal.com profile] schr0dinger asked if we could watch West Side Story. I tried to act as though I wasn't dancing inside when I said "Okay".

When we got to America, he was enthralled. Quotes include "Oh _burn_!", "She didn't say that!", and "That's like *rowr*!".

[livejournal.com profile] mzhotspur liked the dancing and such, but just didn't get nearly as far into it.

As you might imagine, we're home today. The kids are watching tv.

There is little on this earth as cute as a five year old, in her Superman PJs, head-banging to the "Justice League" end credits theme song.

I hurt today.

As I was finishing my deadlifts on Saturday I saw a guy demonstrating what looked remarkably like static trapeze exercises on the pull up bar. I went over to ask if that's what it was. Next thing I know I'm doing stupid human tricks with a guy who's sent in tape to audition for American Ninja Warrior, and a woman who expects to qualify in the next CrossFit regionals. I showed them the silk L climb, he showed me his "hopping from pull up bar to other pull up bar", I showed them meat hooks, she did this lovely dance-y hanging twist thing...

But I'm older than they are. Ouch. Kids today, with their plyometric strength, and their stamina...

I pointed the guy at Esh, I think that he'll be like a kid in a candy store.

Does anyone know why it is that in Java 8 List.replaceAll doesn't return the list in question (post replacement (or even better, with lazy evaluation waiting to happen))?

That asked, going back before java 8, does anyone know why List.add doesn't return the list? I think the official reason is so that it can always return true so as to implement Collection.list. But that's kind of terrible...

I mean is there a bad reason, or just no reason at all? The entire point of java 8 lambdas is to reduce the amount you have to type...

I'd like this:
   System.out.println(new LinkedList().add(1).add(2).replaceAll(i -> i*i).add(3));

to generate this:
   [1,4,3]

Instead I have to do this:
   List list = new LinkedList<>();
   list.add(1);
   list.add(2);
   list.replaceAll(i -> i*i);
   list.add(3);
   System.out.println(list);

Is there some java 8 thing I haven't seen yet that might improve this?

[livejournal.com profile] schr0dinger should be asleep. We put him to bed over an hour ago.

He claims that he was scared of the dark. That's why he had to build his own night light. From snap circuits. In the dark.

On hearing noises upstairs, over two hours past bed time.

5 AM November 3rd 2013:

Manhattan is populated by hundreds of surprisingly fit looking people walking purposefully in various directions, none of them really dressed for the weather.

And one group of 5 young ladies who are clearly looking for one last Halloween party for the year.

As I was headed up stairs to go to bed just now, [livejournal.com profile] mzhotspur wandered out of her room and said "I need to cuddle.".

She was like unto a limpet attached to my chest for maybe five minutes. Then all of a sudden she was done, so I carried her back to bed, tucked her in, got a promise that I could give her a kiss tomorrow, and went off on my way.

Woe is me. Woe.

On Sunday [livejournal.com profile] coraline offered to let me borrow the first two books of Dragonbreath to read to [livejournal.com profile] schr0dinger. Due to various things, that only happened tonight, and we only got through the first 6 pages. As I was singing him down, he piped up with "sideways beep, sideways beep, sideways beep *giggle*".

I think he likes it.

Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] schr0dinger lost a tooth.

I am not ready for him to have lost a tooth.

Three weeks ago (to the day I believe) he made his first real-time, improvised, conversational joke.

About a month and a half ago ago he started taking the kids version of the parkour class that I take.

Thankfully, [livejournal.com profile] mzhotspur is relenting in her "no hugs for daddy" campaign...

Yesterday I took [livejournal.com profile] mzhotspur and [livejournal.com profile] schr0dinger to their respective swim classes. I was trying to watch [livejournal.com profile] schr0dinger's class through a window when [livejournal.com profile] mzhotspur asked to play hide and seek. Being a bit distracted I asked her to hide where she could see me.

She said "I'll hide under the table.". She walked over, put her hand on it, and said "This one.". She sat down underneath it. I piped up with the requisite "Oh no! Where is [livejournal.com profile] mzhotspur?" "I'm right here!" She sounded kind of exasperated.

We're fine

No I wasn't running Boston. Yes I normally run next to it for the show, but this year I wasn't even doing that.

Everyone else here doesn't even normally run next to it. We're all fine.

Horrified, but physically fine. My heart goes out to absolutely everyone involved.

After reading my last post [livejournal.com profile] athenasbanquet was nice enough to invite me to go climbing again on Wednesday night. I had a blast.

I bumped into [livejournal.com profile] bbbsg and watched her climb things that I wasn't even sure were valid routes. Then I met a woman who I was sure was [livejournal.com profile] queen_of_wands' taller sister, but she denied knowing the name. Finally, as I was leaving I bumped into my parkour teacher. It was his easy night, when he's not teaching parkour, nor doing gymnastics...

Speaking of that, today was parkour, and as I was warming up I was trying to press into handstand. This older guy came over and started offering suggestions on exercises to help with that. Once I came right side up, I did a double take. He's the teacher's father. And he has 14 years of some level of competitive gymnastics in his background. Makes sense in retrospect.

I was really impressed; he wasn't just there to watch. He had 20 years on everyone else there, but he kept up. Also, it was incredibly cute watching the two of them interact.

On Sunday [livejournal.com profile] larksdream took me climbing (or rather, bouldering). I haven't posted until now because from my mid-forearms out, things aren't really working again yet.

It was great fun. She was able to show me how to climb bits in ways that I understood, that I would not have come up with on my own anytime soon.

I think if I went more often than once every five years I might get better at this...
