why I hurt today
Feb. 24th, 2013 04:28 pmOr rather, why I hurt last night, when I promised
minerva42 to record this for posterity. Anyway, here goes:
Also, totally unrelated; since I joined the borg, I've been bumping into people at work that I know socially that I didn't know were co-workers about once a day. Last night was the first time that I bumped into a co-worker that I didn't know was in my social circles.
ricevermicelli pointed out that she's unsure whether I've joined a company or a frat...
- Friday morning I didn't have much planned in the way of physical activity, so I lifted weights for a while.
- At lunch time my boss invited me to go for a run. I forgot that he's faster than I am. His "out for a run pace" is my "I could go faster, but this isn't easy" pace. We ran 6 miles at an 8:20 pace. Honestly, I would have run with him anyway; it was a gorgeous day.
- When I got back from the run, I had email informing me that there was a parkour open gym that night starting at 7:30. There was this adult-sized jungle gym to go over and through and around and stuff. I did enough to kind of rip up one hand. I taped it up, and did enough more to wear through the tape a bit. It was so much fun. I was working on this thing where you run, jump, grab a bar and swing around to go over a different bar, let go, keep swinging around, catch the second bar, and keep going. I kind of got it by the end.
- Then we took the adult sized jungle gym apart. I got to bed by 1 AM.

Oct. 3rd, 2012 11:56 amYesterday, on the way in to pick up
mzhotspur, I asked
schr0dinger if he knew that I loved him.
"Daddy," he said with an air of patient resignation to my slowness of wit "I _always_ knew that."
The only down side is that he didn't let me snuggle him.

In which I talk about sports, kinda
Sep. 26th, 2012 09:32 pmI've been hearing entirely too much about the terrible NFL refs. They're bad. I get it.
I've also been hearing a lot of theories about why the NFL won't just pay the money for the refs retirement funds. The best one I've heard is that they want to look tough going into the player union contract negotiations.
But I had another thought. The stories I'm hearing now are about "terrible refs", and "contract disputes". The stories I was hearing a few weeks back were about "football causes brain damage, even to kids". I think that the NFL is ok with this change.
Given my status as a consummate sportsman, versed in all the intricacies of professional sports, can someone who knows what they're talking about tell me if I'm nuts?

Jul. 23rd, 2012 07:53 pmShe can't get to LJ just now. She has a feed (
I'm really not keeping it together as well as I'd like. On the way home from the hospital to pick things up for her, I started sobbing on 93S. Luckily in the five or six minutes it took to clear my eyes, absolutely nothing had moved an inch...
The kids are being champs.

You make me happy,

Which gaming system should we get?
Jun. 6th, 2012 10:27 amI don't play video games. Neither does
ricevermicelli. So we don't have a game system. But we're about to have two kids (5 & 2) that will be wanting to cling to, and climb over, a mother who will be trying to recover from surgery and possibly chemo. And who could hopefully be distracted by a video game console.
So what would people recommend? Both for a system, and for a few games. Something that doesn't grow with the kids is not a negative in my book (it might not be a positive either, but I'm certainly not willing to pay much for it).
ricevermicelli wants us to get something that can play netflix, but that doesn't seem to limit it much (unless some systems do it better than others?). The ps3, wii, and xbox 360 all claim to speak WPA2, so we should be ok there (unless one of them is lying...).
Also, anything that I don't even know enough to be thinking about?

So ricevermicelli has breast cancer, and at her last appointment they helpfully suggested that she call her insurance company to ask if they cover the treatment center. I was a little surprised to hear this, I figured that they would know whether they took Cigna or not, but no, there's variation from plan to plan. So we call. And get hung up on by the automatic system. Repeatedly.
After 5 PM Monday I thought to just say "Operator" until they put me in a queue for a human. It took over 20 minutes (to be fair, the system did tell me it would be over 20 minutes). Anyway, I talked to a human who was as helpful as her system would let her be. She couldn't tell for sure. She'd like us to ask the treatment center. The official Cigna line is that you have to be an advocate for yourself. I think that their business model is based on hoping we don't get the treatment, or don't discover until too late that we're somewhere that hasn't contracted with Cigna.
So yesterday, while we were actually at MGH, with the help of a friendly Dr (RV's mom (very helpful that)), an MGH billing specialist, and a conference call with the Cigna people that took over half an hour, we now know that MOST of the things that HAVE to happen are definitely covered. There are some things that HAVE to happen that we're still unsure about, but very good odds. Among other things the surgery might change billing codes during the surgery, and Cigna can't just tell us "All of the possible billing codes are covered.". They have to go in and check one by one, and there are evidently hundreds of possibilities.
If the insurance companies did their jobs adequately, I wouldn't be quite so gung-ho for a government takeover of the system. But they seem to consider customer service to mean buttering up the HR rep who decides which insurance company they're going to provide to employees. Consideration as to people who then have to use their system does not seem to be their primary focus.

It's dangerous to go alone! Take this.
May. 8th, 2012 10:00 pmAs I was putting him to bed,
schr0dinger asked me to take his plush duck to bed. I was a little confused, thinking he wanted to sleep with the duck. No, he wanted me to sleep with the duck. I'm not sure which of us he thinks needs the cuddles, but I'm heading to bed now, and I'm taking the duck with me...
my mother passed away
Feb. 29th, 2012 03:43 pmOn Sunday afternoon my mother passed away in her home. My sister found her.
I've been in NY since then, and I'll be here for a few more days, and I'm stealing
ricevermicelli and
schr0dinger to join me for two.
If I'd just recently started making plans with you for the first time in years, please accept my apologies for just not doing anything right now.
I'm kind of numb with bursts of sobbing.
I want my mommy.

Jan. 30th, 2012 12:07 pmAt Arisia I bought the kids a "Giant Cthulhu Dice". Yes, I know "dice" is plural. I assume that Steve Jackson knows it too, but didn't want to hear all the bad puns that selling a "Giant Cthulhu Die" would entail.
Anyway. The kids were playing with it, and I asked
mzhotspur if she could say "Tekeli li". She said "No!". Then, from a space behind her mother's legs, I heard a very soft, sweet voice piping up with "Tekeli li li li".

Jan. 15th, 2012 07:19 pmShortly after listening to a Very Educational piece on MLK today,
schr0dinger was asked
"Did you learn about Dr. King today?"
"Uh huh."
"And what did he fight?" (Injustice being the desired answer)
"...Green Goblin?"

The other day
schr0dinger wanted to grab my hands and walk himself up my body to do a flip. I asked him if he could do it without putting his feet on me. Turns out he could. Then I asked if he could flip back. Turns out he could. He had a pretty good pike position once I explained what that was.
I checked, and it turns out that it's the third most giggly skin the cat of all time.

I finally ran a sub 4 hour marathon! by less than 15 seconds... This was my third swing at 4 hours, my last two marathons were 4:01:11 and 4:00:16.
ricevermicelli also ran her first half at the same time!
Due to the way the courses were set up, and our respective speeds, we managed to get a quick smooch in mid-race as we were coming at each other over a bridge. Then she was sensible at the end and limited herself to yelling and clapping when she saw me in the last mile.

Boston Traffic Signals: A Bestiary
Aug. 19th, 2011 06:07 pmSo, we're all hopefully familiar with red, yellow, and green. Even blinking red and blinking yellow should be more or less comprehensible. But this is Boston. I've seen others. I've seen blinking green, and I think it's useless the way we use it. I've seen (red & yellow). I've seen blinking (red & yellow). They also seem to be slightly less useful than nothing.
Today I saw (solid red & blinking yellow). I'm pretty sure that this means "Here in Boston, we don't want just anybody surviving."

Jan. 27th, 2011 11:37 amLast night, attempting to make lemonade out of all the lemons falling from the sky,
mzhotspur,
schr0dinger, and I walked the three blocks to the local Irish bakery. There was a lot of snow on the ground, and at one point
schr0dinger piped up, in a teasing, sing-song kind of voice "I'm following in your footsteps.".
Yeah, he got the chips he asked for...
