Today in the commons I heard a young man singing "You are my sunshine" in what sounded to me like the style of the Violent Femmes.

Yesterday I tried to go for a run. But there was this thing just blocking any motion in downtown Boston. I think they called it a "mara-thon". Bastards. Don't they have any respect for people trying to exercise?

There are runners, strong willed and stern enough to not gratuitously run in the road simply in order to run across the Boston Marathon finish line / gate / thing, particularly when they've only run about a third of the proper distance.

I am not one of those runners.

It felt surprisingly good. The cop had this "Great, another idiot in the road" look. And the two miles I had left were just plain easy...

So a question for those of you who have experience in publishing: is there any way that a book that amazon says was published on September 13, 2005 could possibly contain text related to hurricane Katrina (well, aside from amazon being wrong...)?

Separately, since a third person has now asked, in March I ran 117.3 miles. And saw the world's most uninspired Hare Krishnas while doing so...

ETA:
The author says that he wrote that text in the late 90s.

+ Ran 100 miles
+ Turned 35
- Discovered I am now a "Men's small"
+ Performed on the lyra for the second time. Performed really well for the first time.
+ 102 miles actually.
+ Watched [livejournal.com profile] schr0dinger go from cruising to basically walking. Now that it's March, he's just plain walking. Sometimes.
- Chased wildly after [livejournal.com profile] schr0dinger trying to keep him alive
+ 102.2 to be precise...
+ Felt my rotator cuff improve significantly
+ Snuggled [livejournal.com profile] ricevermicelli lots

February was a good month.

Short version: WoSaT is available on torrent sites. It's legal with what looks to me like a CC by-nc-nd license.

Long version: Have you ever bemoaned how a movie suffers from too many cooks, and not enough geeky hand-done special effects? Want a movie made by one guy, in his garage, while his producer skipped town with the capital and killed distribution, about, oddly enough, one guy, making a movie in his garage while the producers attempted to steal the capital and kill distribution?

Have you ever thought that it might be a good idea for the creator of an unavailable movie to release it free so as to create interest and possibly allow him to do something new?

Either way, Mike Jittlov has released his film "The Wizard of Speed and Time" on various torrent sites. He requests that, should you be interested in hearing more about his projects, you send him your email address.

I've been looking for a statement on his site as proof that he is behind this, and I can't find one, but A) his site hasn't been updated in years, and B) there's a bunch of people on the web who claim that they've talked to him and he is, in fact, behind this. So either there's a conspiracy, or it's really him. It has a "Special Karma Calming Notice", and we all know that those can't be faked...

Among other places, it is available at http://www.mininova.org/tor/347217

I'll be bringing a few copies to hot foods.

Question for you.

I was reminded today that, as happens roughly every seven years, the super bowl will be happening on my birthday. The super bowl is always big, but this is the first time that restaurants have told me that they'll be closed that day (something about "history" and "perfect").

Watching a game on television seems to lack some sort of birthday quality.

Any ideas what to do?

2007 had its ups and downs, but for me the good parts trumped.

[livejournal.com profile] schr0dinger was born.
[livejournal.com profile] ricevermicelli left the job she was bored in for grad school.
I'm sure there's other stuff, but it kind of falls by the way side...

Also, I ended the year about as well as a year can be ended. Much time was spent with [livejournal.com profile] blk and her boys, [livejournal.com profile] mzrowan (no boys attached), [livejournal.com profile] ricevermicelli, & [livejournal.com profile] schr0dinger.

There was silks, and cuddles, peanut butter chocolate chip cookies, and a run that turned out far longer than it was meant to be (but it was lovely, I bumped into [livejournal.com profile] clara_girl as I was warming up, then I got to see ice sculptures wearing quilts to keep them cold, and there were revelers lining all of Boylston & Newbury (well, at least until Newbury magically jumps a river a little after Mass Ave)).

On the 30th [livejournal.com profile] schr0dinger stood unsupported for at least a second. On the 31st he experimented with saying both "Hi!" & "Mamamama". I'm looking forward to 2008.

He tucked the blanket we're sharing up around his chin as his eyes closed.

nine years

Well, after nine years and one month of being able to say "I've never had a problem where I live", I had one. On the T home from work, I was attacked by a young man who I believe was showing off how tough he is for a girl.

I'm fine. I have a very dramatic scrape along the side of my face. I need new glasses.

I'm trying to decide if this was actually a function of where I live or not. I'm currently leaning towards "no".

These past few months I've been going through my library reading the books that I bought years ago, but never read. For the most part, these books have been terrible (e.g. "Coriolanus, the chariot" by Alan Yates started out with a vaguely interesting premise, then just became bad. (No, worse that that. When one character asks "Are you sure you want to do that?" the other senses a trap. I'm not kidding.) "Imperial Stars" was so bad that I started to doubt Doc Smith. Turns out someone else expanded the late Doc's story into a novel).

Anyway, I'm in the middle of "Stochastic man" by Robert Silverberg. It's about a man who can kind of see into the future. Written in the 70s it's set in the mid 90s NYC. At one point the protagonist goes to a party that occupies an entire floor of a skyscraper. On one side the view is blocked by the twin towers. On the other side the windows are opaqued so that people don't see the crater where the statue of liberty used to be.

I put the book down and cried.

Moto was just playing.

Elizabeth was trying to feed him as I was parking the car outside of silks, and he wasn't showing up. I unparked, and we spent a few hours looking frantically. Once [livejournal.com profile] ricevermicelli printed up "missing" posters, he realized that he could cash in the reward and turned up promptly.

We had all these scenarios of Moto being so jealous of [livejournal.com profile] schr0dinger that he decided to go on walkabout.

We're now a little high from the relief.

I performed on the lyra Sunday for the first time. It was fun, though I forgot an entire section (the under bar work) and wondered why I seemed to run out of routine before I ran out of song...

[livejournal.com profile] ricevermicelli rather liked the performances, though has tactfully forborne any specific comments. [livejournal.com profile] schr0dinger seemed to have fun, but got fussy when the mostly naked guy went on.

Monday was perhaps the first day since we brought [livejournal.com profile] schr0dinger home that no one came to visit or anything. It was heavenly.

Tuesday [livejournal.com profile] buxom_bey came over to help get the nursery walled. She is a goddess.

Little known fact: "Father" comes from a Norwegian word which means "Man who recycles cardboard".

And his name is [livejournal.com profile] schr0dinger.

Schrödinger was born around 3:30 PM on Tuesday the 20th. He weighed 7 lbs. 11 oz., was 19" long, and is the most precious thing ever.

Schrödinger & [livejournal.com profile] ricevermicelli are doing fine, even if we are all exhausted.

No, we haven't got a name for him yet...

Shoveling snow with a broken rib is surprisingly un-painful. As long as I shovel lefty.

It's also fun cutting through the occasional 2" thick sheet of ice in order to shovel. It makes me feel like I accomplished something. Plus it gives me an excuse to use tools that are clearly overkill.

It was actually nice getting out and doing something, so I did one of the neighbors walks as well (The older gentleman who takes care of his aunt, yes. The somewhat mercenary real estate agent trying to flip the place behind me, no. (I actually feel kind of odd about that; for the most part this affects people who aren't either of them, but still, I find myself willing to do one but not the other.))
